Become a foster hero

Beagle Rescue of Southern Maryland is not a shelter, nor do we own or maintain a kennel — all of our beagles stay in the homes of volunteer fosters!

What is the commitment to fostering?

Our foster homes provide food, shelter, and TLC to rehabilitate our beagles, assist them with their transition from “pound puppies” to healthy, well-adjusted house pets, and ready them for prospective adopters. BRSM takes care of the vet bills for foster pups.

Is fostering challenging?

It can be challenging to bring a dog into your home, love them and help them adjust, then hand them over to an adopter for a new life in their forever home — but it’s immensely rewarding, too!

why are fosters important?

It would be impossible for us to rescue as many beagles as we do without the patience, persistence, and (yes!) emotional bravery of our extended foster home network.

Do i need to have experience?

If you are unsure about fostering long-term, please at least give it a try! Even if you decide it isn’t for you, providing a loving home for just a few weeks can make an incredible difference in the life of a rescued beagle.

How do I become a foster?

If you haven’t adopted from or fostered with BRSM before:

A BRSM volunteer will review your profile and contact you to guide you through the rest of the process, which includes:

  • Reviewing and signing the Foster Agreement, which spells out the specific expectations and responsibilities of fostering; or the Foster Agreement PDF.
  • We will conduct background checks including; criminal, property, and vet checks along with a home visit. No exceptions!
    • We will NOT place any dog into a situation where violence is part of the family history, or a home where pets have not been routinely kept current on their vaccines and heartworm testing and preventative.

Foster Testimonials

"After losing our beagle, we weren't ready to adopt again yet. Fostering has been the best way to enjoy snuggles and bring joy to our home again while offering a safe place for these sweet dogs to land until they find their fur-ever home."

"We've fostered 23 dogs from BRSM and have loved each and every one of them! Fostering gives us an opportunity to help a dog at its most trying time, and give it all the love and support it needs to find a happy forever home."

"I've been fostering dogs for 20 years. I do it because there's nothing like knowing YOU are saving that dog's life. And, I've met countless wonderful people along the way. Fostering is rewarding on so many levels!"
