Meet Charlie B. Haven!
4 years old, 30 lb
Charlie is a beautiful 4-year-old boy. He has been in his home since he was a puppy, but it’s become clear that Charlie would be safer in a home where he could be better contained. Charlie goes on the lam at every opportunity and has started to venture further and further from home, often crossing roads to do so.
Typically beagle, he becomes deaf to the sound of his mom calling, shaking the treat can or banging his food bowls to tempt him back home and his exploits often find him taunting the neighbor’s chickens, making him unpopular in the hood. Whether it’s digging under the fence or performing an olympic worthy bolt out the front door, we’d like to find this guy a home with someone who understands the particular quirks of the breed.
Charlie is affectionate and cuddly with his family (which includes school-age children) and even good with cats. His foster family fosters cats and kittens with no problems. When the bipeds are playing and acting silly, Charlie is right in there with them, but is otherwise quite content to hang on the sofa with the family. He takes treats gently, leaving all fingers firmly attached to your hand, and sits pretty to do so.
Charlie can be reactive when meeting other dogs on a walk, and may growl if another dog gets near his food bowl while he’s eating, so may need some training in that. The good news is that he is very treat motivated and with consistency, will learn fast.
He’s young, big (30ish lbs), and strong and could knock small children over in his enthusiasm, so we will not place him with children under 6. He’s also opinionated, so would not be a good candidate for apartment, condo or townhouse living. A fence solidly reinforced at the bottom is a necessity unless he will be exclusively leash-walked. A gate across the inside of your front door would be a real advantage unless you have lightning-quick reflexes — and all your guests do too.
He’s absolutely beautiful, and a nice boy, too! Charlie is house-trained, although he may have accidents while acclimating himself to a new home. Gives kisses!
